Johnsonville Heritage Festival, part 2 – Reenactments

Local citizens enjoy dressing up in Revolutionary era clothing and experiencing a taste of what it was like in this area when General Francis Marion served in the area. Dale Smith has an extensive collection of artifacts from that era, and his family enjoy these opportunities to share it with the public.

Dale’s son-in-law, Tony Youmans is dressed as one of Marion’s Militia. On display is a collection of Revolutionary Era rifles and wepons. The second picture shows several horns for carrying gunpowder. Continue reading

Johnsonville Heritage Festival, part 1 – General Francis Marion Statue

The Johnsonville Heritage Festival was held on May 17-18, 2013. Several activities took place over the weekend which falls on the 100th anniversary of the founding of Johnsonville. The key attraction of the Festival was the unveiling of the statue of General Francis Marion on his Marsh Tacky horse. The festivities took place at Ventors’ Landing in Johnsonville, SC. Francis Marion was commissioned to lead the local militia of patriots in this approximate location which at that time was called Witherspoon’s Ferry.

Looking for contributors

Pee Dee Folks is looking for people who would like to contribute brief articles about happenings in the smaller communities in the Pee Dee Region which go under-served by the city newspapers. There is currently no funding of any kind for this project, but exposure is always helpful for beginning writers. Perhaps a little brainstorming will help to remedy the financing issue.

Third Thursdays – Monthly in Cheraw, SC

Cheraw 3rd ThursdaysGet ready for a night out on the town, Cheraw! Beginning May 16, The Town of Cheraw will launch Third Thursdays, a new summer entertainment series.

The first event in this new series will be a downtown street festival on Thursday, May 16. From 5-8 PM, the Market Hall area will be alive with family-friendly events including a salsa dance demonstration, live bluegrass music in front of Weaver’s Barber Shop, an herbs planting station, face painting, refreshments, & more!

Arts and crafts enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy art demos and hands-on art activities like a mini-class in jewelry-making instruction. Local artists and artisans will be located along Market & Second Streets near the Market Hall area sharing their talents, and several downtown retailers are planning special events. Continue reading

Tara Hall Home for Boys will host the 2nd Annual Tara Hall Paddle Fest Fundraiser on June 15, 2013. Paddle Fest is a family oriented day on the river.

Kayaking participants will launch their kayaks and canoes at 10:00 a.m. on the beautiful
Black Mingo Creek and paddle to Tara Hall Home for Boys. At 10:00 a.m. Tara Hall will
open up the campus for non kayaker to come in. Once at the campus, they will join
everyone else to enjoy bluegrass jam sessions, games, a redneck barrel race, a pileau dinner, door prizes, lots of fun for all. Continue reading
